When any disaster hits — a storm, a disease, a financial crisis — it is always those who struggle most who suddenly find themselves struggling even more. They are our neighbors. Families already living in conditions that aren’t conducive to good health, those whose finances have long been taxed beyond measure because housing eats up too large a portion of their income, those newly vulnerable because of the economic shock waves that something like this so often sets off.
Having to “shelter in place” for families living in overcrowded, unhealthy, or unaffordable circumstances while facing loss of income and uncertain futures is catastrophic. Thus, the longer this pandemic and its economic shocks continue, the situation escalates into a housing emergency in our community. These families need us --YOU and Habitat -- now more than ever.
It is why, even though every area of our organization has been affected, volunteer program halted, and fundraising build events put on pause for the time being, we continue to build the eight Habitat homes in we have under construction - with limited staff and at a slower rate – through this crisis.
Habitat Partner Families have worked long and hard to complete the homeownership program requirements and now they have to wait longer to purchase their home from Habitat with an affordable 30-year, zero-interest mortgage. When these families move into a safe “home of their own”, they will no longer have to face the same dire challenges and choices currently confronting them.
In the face of so much uncertainty, there’s one thing we know for sure: with YOUR HELP, we will continue to serve families in South Palm Beach County.
